For many of the senior residents of Goa, they have witnessed Goa speak a lot of languages. Starting from the Konkani language, which is their official one. However Marathi is also spoken as to the north of Goa lies Maharashtra. Earlier in the Portuguese rule, the language that was spoken was Portuguese language. However after the freedom in 1961, Konkani language has been declared as the official, As Goa falls in the konkan region.

There are some other languages that are also used but on a very small scale. Such as Hindi as it is the national language. Also Kannada as Karnataka lies to the east and south of Goa. English is also spoken on very large scale, as the residents there look upon it as an opportunity and also an essential instrument to interact with tourists who have come to the city from around the world.

Another reason that English is used on a larger scale to interact is that there are many Christian families in this part of the country. However there are many other casts as well but English has been able to ground its foot. In the education in schools Marathi and English is used widely. Also the majority of newspapers and books published are in English and also Marathi.

The amount of tourists visiting Goa has increased immensely, so is the need to learn English has received great interest from the residents. So if you are looking to go to Goa there shouldn’t be a real problem interacting with the residents as majority of them are able to speak in English.
