Geographical Details Of Goa
Goa is a small state located on western coast of Indian peninsula. It is separated from Maharashtra in the north by Terekhol River. Geography of this state is quite similar to its neighbouring states (Maharashtra and Karnataka). This state is divided into 3 parts. First part is Mountainous Region, which is formed by Sahayadri Ranges. Second part is plateau region: it is located in the center of the state. Third part is made of coastal plains and river basins. Sahayadri ranges are spread over an area of 600 square kilometres. They have an average elevation of 800m.
Major peaks of this region are Vaguerim, Sonsagar, Catlanchimuali and Morlemchogor. All rivers of Goa originate from this region. The central part of Goa has plateaus having altitudes ranging from 30m to 100m. Major portions of these planes are drained by two rivers: Zuari and Mandovi. Rivers with shallower basins are Chapora in the north, Kushavati and Sal in the south. Rivers with shallow basins form good alluvial soil.
These basins help in forming lands ideal for carrying agriculture. This state has moderate temperature throughout the year except in rainy season. Average rainfall recorded in this region is quite high especially in the month of July. 1/3 of this state is full of greenery. Bhagwan Mahavir National Park is the largest wildlife reserve of Goa. It is located in Molem. This park is spread over an area of 107square kilometres. National highways of Goa cover a distance of 232km and major district roads of Goa cover a distance of 815km. Goa has only one international airport at Dabolim, located near Vasco.
